How to Load a Rental Bin

Set up before the first item

Keep the approved material list where everyone helping can see it. Choose one person to check unexpected items and contact Bin and Gone about changes. A neighbour's extra furniture or a contractor's leftover material should not quietly become part of a different booking.

Walk the carrying route while your hands are empty. Clear obstructions before lifting, and keep the destination clear. CCOHS recommends suitable gloves and footwear, assessing the load, and getting help with heavy or awkward items. If you cannot handle an item safely, leave it for an appropriate plan.

Plan the shape of the load

Identify the awkward pieces before you fill the easy spaces. Check their dimensions against the bin and ask how they should be loaded. If a bin door is part of the loading plan, have its use explained at delivery.

For approved items you can handle safely, plan a stable arrangement that spreads the load instead of building a tall pile in one corner. Keep flat pieces flat where practical. Add smaller approved items to accessible spaces without reaching into gaps or beneath other material.

Do not climb onto the load, jump on waste or force an item into a space. An item that will not fit within the agreed limits needs a different plan.

Check loose and sharp material separately

Ask how small scraps should be contained before loading them. Packaging requirements depend on the material; a household garbage bag is not a universal solution. Identify sharp edges when discussing the load and follow the agreed handling instructions.

Know when to stop

Keep everything below the rim and follow any lower fill limit agreed for your material. Available space is not proof that more weight is allowed. Check the load during the work, while there is still time to change the plan.

If the load is uneven, an item projects above the bin, or you are unsure about the remaining allowance, stop adding material and call. Do not enter the bin or rearrange a loaded pile to correct it yourself.

Finish with a ground-level check

Before the arranged pickup, check what you can see safely from the ground. Report a problem before the truck arrives so it can be discussed.

• Only the agreed items have been added.
• Nothing projects above the agreed fill level or outside the bin.
• The truck approach and essential walking routes remain clear.
• Any loading concern has been reported to Bin and Gone.
